Balance
Life is a balancing act. As we walk the daily tightrope, we try to balance the various responsibilities and priorities. A balanced healthy brain with the frontal lobe in charge can switch off negative thinking to positive thoughts that are health producing. We have the ability to choose and be intentional about our health, family, a balanced life-style and even spiritual decision. The frontal lobe of the brain can help you to be a Good-Choice-Maker and a Bad-Habit-Breaker.
Enjoy
We are born to enjoy life at its fullest. We all want to be happy and joy is one of the basic human needs. Smiles are a joy thing. Did you know it takes more muscles to frown than it takes to smile? We all know that it is better to smile than to frown. Science has discovered that the brain functions best when there is Joy. Joy is the magic medium that makes the brain work better. The state of mind of the individual determines if positive or negative chemicals are produced. If we have prolonged negative emotions, the brain sends its nerve networks a cortisol bath which can damage the nerve pathways especially in young children. To be happy we have to feel that, on the whole, whatever sorrows, trials, and tribulations we may encounter, we will still experience the joy of being alive.
Appreciate
Appreciation brings a long list of health and relationship bonuses. This has to do with plus factors in life, not just the absence of tragedy. It has to do mainly with appreciating what we have. When we count our blessings it literally bathes us inwardly with good hormones. When we are thankful and when we enjoy each other, our bodies produce endorphins, which make us feel good and give us a natural high. Appreciation is related to emotional health and it carries over into our family relationships, success in the workplace, physical health, service to others, and to our relationship with God and others. A good prescription is to make a list of things for which you are thankful for. Read it daily and add to it daily and express thankfulness.
Nutrition
Of major importance to the maintenance of balanced health is proper nutrition. Due to modern farming along with packaging and food manufacturing methods much of the food available in Western Society is denatured and void of the necessary nutrition to maintain a healthy body. In addition to eating fresh fruits and vegetables we are advised to eat a balanced diet in the following proportions. Fresh fruits and vegetables should make up to 70% or more of our diet, while carbohydrates should not exceed 20% of our diet and protein foods (nuts, legumes, fish, and dairy products should not exceed 10% of our diet. On the other hand protein foods of a vegetable origin create a mineral balance within the body which is vital for good health.
Exercise
Physical exercise is a necessary function that maintains the operations of the body systems. Physical exercise also increases our energy reserve to enable us to cope with the situations that we meet in everyday life. Vigorous physical exercise on a regular basis is necessary in order to prevent our bodies from deteriorating. When the human body is involved in movement, all the systems are activated. The lymphatic system activates the Immune system and the cardiovascular system supplies oxygen rich blood to the body cells. Studies show that inactivity increases the rate of degenerative diseases and conditions such as heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, anxiety, and depression.
Water
In the human body the most common molecule is that or water. Depending on body fat, the human body contains between 45% - 75% water. Muscle tissue is between 50% - 70% water and blood is over 80% water. Brain grey matter is between 70% - 85% and even our dense bones are between 20% - 33% water. Hence when we become dehydrated we tend to feel weak. Water helps with the functioning of every system of the body. Respiration, digestion, circulation, glandular secretion, temperature regulation, waste elimination all depend on water. It also helps to lubricate, insulate, protect, and give flexibility to the muscles, ligaments, and joints.
Sunshine
The sun sends its solar energy waves from 93,000,000 miles away to the earth at 186,000 miles per second. These energy waves that we call sunlight, consist of many types of energy, giving a full spectrum of light which consist of a great deal more than our eyes can actually see. Sunbathing in moderation is a good thing as sunlight is effective in killing germs on our skin and is a good healing agent for many skin diseases. It also strengthens our skin making it less susceptible to injury and infection. Regular but moderately controlled exposure to sunlight is a good thing for our whole body as this will enable the skin to produce the vitamin D that we need. It also helps to lower the bad cholesterol levels in our body. Sunlight also increases our sense of well being. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) syndrome which affects our mental feelings and overall general health is caused by a lack of full spectrum light.
Trust
The trust element deals with relationship issues. We all need to be at ease with ourselves in our environment. Every human being has relationship issues in three areas. We can call this the relationship triangle; we have a relationship with ourselves, with others (individuals and social groups) and with a Motivating Force. For religious people a Motivating Force is God. No matter how we may try to protect ourselves, we all have to deal with others, and we are dealing with others on an ongoing basis. We have the personal ability at any time in our lives to further develop our strengths and to overcome inherited or developed weaknesses. Many times, when dealing with our weaknesses we will need the help of others, especially those that we trust.
Air
A 12-mile-thick layer wrapped around our planet, the atmosphere consists of about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% argon, helium, carbon dioxide, and other gases. It also harbours a fair amount of water vapour and an unwarranted amount of pollution. As this mixture is inhaled into the lungs, about a fifth of the oxygen is retained while the rest is exhaled along with carbon dioxide and water vapour. The maximum amount of air a person can inhale and exhale in one breath is called the vital capacity. A good vital capacity is related to a greater life expectancy. Several factors can affect a person's vital capacity: smoking, air pollution, posture, exercise, obesity, and shallow breathing. Breathing problems such as asthma and bronchitis also have an effect on vital capacity.
Rest
The principle of activity preceding rest is an important one for our health. Physical and mental activity both requires energy and creates waste products. As the energy level goes down and wastes accumulate, we experience fatigue and a desire for rest. During rest, energy is restored, and the waste build up is diminished. An important difference between physical and mental activity is that physical activity usually leaves the muscles relaxed, whereas prolonged mental activity alone leaves the muscles tense. Rest and sleep are dependent upon our ability to relax; the person who is tense is not relaxing, and therefore cannot really rest. We need more muscular exercise in order to truly relax, rest, and counteract fatigue
